Hi, My Name Is Brooklyn, And I’m From … Brooklyn

The recent release of the most popular baby names of 2006 by the New York City Health Department continues to spark interest. The New York Daily News just got a hold of it, and figured out that the name Brooklyn is on the increase in the city.

But what’s really interesting in this story is that while the name Brooklyn showed up more often in New York in 2006 than in previous years, it’s actually trailing the rest of the country in overall popularity!

In the Big Apple, Brooklyn ranked 151st in popularity in 2006, mostly as a girl’s name. But in the U.S. as a whole, it ranked 67th. That’s a jump from 78th place in 2005.

Come on New York! It’s your borough — but it looks like the hinterland is more hip on this issue. Could it be that the world actually doesn’t end at the Hudson River?
