The meaning of the name Jacob is not completely clear. It derives from the Latin Jacobus, which comes in turn from Greek, Iakobos, and ultimately Hebrew, Ya'aqov. It has been commonly said to mean "supplanter," or one who "takes the place of," in reference to the biblical Jacob who was the father of the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel. Another theory states that the name means "may God protect."
