Unique Boy Names
It's an established fact that boys' names are less diverse than girls' names. In 2009, for example, the Top 20 boys' names in the U.S. represented 327,000 boys. By contrast, the Top 20 girls' names represented only 248,000 girls. Boys tend to cluster around a smaller group of names. As a result, unique boy names are less common than unique names for girls, and may call for a little more consideration before choosing a name that will set a boy totally apart from his peers.
Let's be honest. If you want a name that is 100% unique, you might just as well make one up. Even then, unless the name is totally weird and unattractive, the chances are that someone has beaten you to the registrar's office with it.
The challenge, when you're looking for unique baby boy names, is to come up with a name that somehow blends originality and distinction with meaning and significance.
Boys' names, like boys, come in all shapes and sizes. In preparing our list of unique boy names, we set some ground rules about what kind of names might fit on the list.
Our goal is to provide a diverse list of names that have some history behind them, some sense of meaning and origin, so that even though it may not literally be a unique baby boy name, it can still be very meaningful to both the giver, and to the boy who will grow up with the name and live with it.
Second, therefore, we try to avoid the obvious trap of choosing "made-up" names that serve no other purpose than to demonstrate that the parents know how to scramble letters. So even though we are creating a list of unique baby boy names, we avoid homemade names like Brilloman or Daytona96, which, while certainly unique, are not going to work for the vast majority of parents.
Third, in most cases, we avoid the trendy contortions of established names, a trend which ultimately stretches the original name to extremes. This eliminates the Aden, Aaden, Adan, Aedan phenomenon that has crept into American baby naming in recent years. Sometimes, however, we have chosen to include a variant on a more common name, if the variant holds up well as a viable, long-term offshoot of the original.
Our final list of unique boy names gives you some 40 different names to consider. Most of them, hopefully, will be very unfamiliar to you. But all of them are "real" names in the sense that each name has its place in a recognized culture and language, whether the name originated in the last decade, or 2,000 years ago.
